Action Alert February 2016
This is an archived edition of Action Alert.
Safe Schools is supposedly an anti-bullying program that began in Victoria in 2010 as a part of Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria. Since then, with more than $8,000,000 of Federal funding approved by the former Labor Government, the program has been rolled out in schools across the nation. At this stage, schools have the freedom to choose whether they will implement the program, but some 500 schools have chosen to present Safe Schools to their students.
No one would endorse bullying, and Safe Schools is ostensibly an anti-bullying program. However, the program does not even address the seven most common reasons why children experience bullying! Safe Schools focuses on one issue only – on educating students in the acceptance of homosexuality as a normal lifestyle so that they will not bully fellow students who identify as same-sex or transgender. Aimed at children as young as eleven-years-of-age, Safe Schools promotes the idea that any type of sexual experimentation and sexual fluidity and transgenderism – which some people regard as gender dysmorphia – is good and acceptable. Safe Schools is a radical form of sex education that promotes a fluid gender ideology and educates children about the meaning of terms such as “queer”, “pansexual”, “sister girl” and “trans guy”. The program provides links to a website called Minus 18 where children can find out about breast binding, penis tucking, oral sex and hook-ups, and two virginities (one with a girl, one with a boy). As Lyle Shelton, Managing Director of Australian Christian Lobby, said, “It is putting the ideology of Mardi Gras into schools.”
Burwood Girls High School in Sydney was one of the schools that trialled Proud Schools – the NSW equivalent of Safe Schools – and the implementation of the program at that school included inviting a drag queen to talk to the whole school on their diversity “Day of Celebration” on 26 February 2013, holding a rainbow flag-raising ceremony, eating rainbow-coloured cupcakes, and signing a “True Colours” wall mural in the playground as an indication of their support for homosexual ‘marriage’. Students who declined to participate in the activities or who refused to sign the mural were harassed and vilified by other students. In fact, the Safe Schools programs have actually fostered bullying against children who do not embrace ‘diversity’. Where Safe Schools events have happened, children who have been singled out as homophobic – for whatever reason: religious, ethical, biological – are now the ones bullied as “unaccepting”.
Safe Schools teaching resources urge children –
- to imagine (at age 11) that they are 16 and going out with a person of the same sex that they are “really into”;
- to use toilets and change rooms based on the gender kids “feel” they are, regardless of their actual biology;
- to understand that asking whether a newborn baby is a boy or a girl reinforces a “heteronormative worldview”;
- to experiment with chest binding for girls who feel they are boys – despite potential injury;
- to experiment with penis tucking for boys who feel they are girls – despite potential injury;
- to advocate for same-sex ‘marriage’ – resulting in bullying of kids who support natural marriage.
Safe Schools resources also provide misleading statistics, including the debunked claim that 10% of people are same-sex attracted and 4% are transgender.
Australian Christian Lobby has spoken with the former Minister for Education (Hon Christopher Pyne) to oppose the Safe Schools Australia Coalition programs and FamilyVoice Australia has presented an open letter – signed by more than 14,000 Australians – against Safe Schools to the then Deputy Prime Minister (Hon Warren Truss). Senator Simon Birmingham, the current Minister for Education (and an outspoken supporter of same-sex ‘marriage’), responded to the criticisms of Safe Schools by stating, “The objectives I think are perfectly reasonable objectives; there should be no more a place for homophobia in our schools than there is for racism in our schools, and we should be ensuring that every student is taught key attitudes around tolerance and acceptance of others.”
It is vitally important that we continue to speak out against this program of homosexual and transgender indoctrination. Contact Senator Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training [PO Box 6100, Senate, Parliament House, Canberra, ACT, 2600, or telephone (02) 6277 7350, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Senator Birmingham has promised to review the content of Safe Schools when the current round of funding expires, but in the light of its appalling content and in light of the promise by the Victorian Premier to make the program mandatory in all Victorian schools by 2018, the program needs to be cancelled now and replaced with other readily-available programs that address the real causes of bullying.
